If no one comes up with a fourth suggestion, mine would be Trilby by George Du Maurier. The title of the book seems to have faded into obscurity over the years, but aparently it was insanely popular at the end of the 19th century and spawned a number of fashions. Plus, it's the origin of the whole Svengali thing. I could do with an excuse to read it...
